Day 12: Hengifoss & Stuðlagil Canyon
Exploring East Iceland: Waterfalls, Canyons & Ever-Changing Landscapes
17-10-2025

Today’s adventure takes you north — a road trip filled with two stunning stops that make the journey truly unforgettable! My tip: hit the road early from your accommodation so you can take your time exploring each site without rushing. Depending on where you’re staying, you’ve got quite a drive ahead — but every kilometer is worth it.
Your first stop is Hengifoss, Iceland’s third-highest waterfall, standing tall at 128 meters. The striking red clay and black basalt layers on the surrounding cliffs create a breathtaking natural contrast. Before you can get close to the falls, you’ll need to hike up a gravel path — around 190 meters in elevation gain. It’s a bit of a climb, but once you reach the top, that dramatic view of Hengifoss makes every step worth it.
Next up is Stuðlagil Canyon, one of Iceland’s most famous geological wonders. The name translates roughly to “Basalt Column Canyon” — and once you see it, you’ll understand why. The walk to the canyon takes about 30 minutes and is relatively flat, making it the perfect follow-up after the Hengifoss hike. When the canyon finally comes into view, prepare to be amazed: bright blue glacial water flows between towering, dark basalt columns that seem almost otherworldly.
The canyon’s iconic hexagonal columns were formed when ancient lava rapidly cooled and cracked into geometric shapes — a natural process called columnar jointing. The result? Thousands of slender volcanic pillars stacked side by side in perfect symmetry.
After soaking in the views of Stuðlagil, continue your journey north. Keep your camera ready — Iceland’s landscape constantly transforms around you. One moment it’s lush and green; the next, a lunar terrain with rugged craters and volcanic plains.
It’s a long travel day, so take some well-deserved rest when you arrive. Tomorrow’s route is shorter, with plenty more Icelandic wonders waiting for you to explore!
