Today’s journey takes you eastward through Iceland, with plans to later head north. But before you get lost in the miles ahead, your itinerary holds a show-stopping pause — one of Iceland’s most photographed gems.
Meet Vestrahorn, the dramatic mountain that has stolen the hearts (and camera lenses) of travelers worldwide. It’s easy to see why. To reach the famous black sand beach that frames this striking peak, you’ll need to buy a ticket at the small gate before driving in. Once parked, step onto the soft black volcanic sands, where patches of vibrant green grass create stunning contrast against the backdrop of the rugged Vestrahorn mountain. Take your time here — it’s the kind of view you’ll want to soak in from every angle.
When you’ve had your fill of mountain magic, keep driving just a little further to reach another parking area. This spot might surprise you: it’s a haven for Icelandic wildlife. Here, birdwatchers will be spoiled with variety, while patient travelers might spot seals swimming near the rocky shore. A short walk over the stones gives you the best vantage point for seal spotting — so keep your eyes peeled.
Your adventure continues along Iceland’s breathtaking eastern coastline. With sweeping ocean views, the road itself becomes part of the experience. Thankfully, there are a few designated pull-off spots where you can step out, stretch, and take in the scenery from land. And don’t forget to scan the horizon — wild reindeer might just wander into view. We were lucky enough to see an entire group crossing the vast, open plains, a moment we’ll never forget.
Tonight, you’ll rest in East Iceland for just one night. After this full day of nature and discovery, you’ll be ready for tomorrow’s drive toward North Iceland — a route that promises not one, but two spectacular stops along the way.
