Today is a day of contrasts—between cool sea air and extreme heat, between natural beauty and the raw power of destruction.
The day begins at Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach, Iceland’s world-famous black sand beach. Here, you’ll find striking basalt columns formed by slow, even cooling of thick lava flows, causing vertical cracks that create these incredible hexagonal formations.
But it’s not just the rocks that capture your attention—the wildlife here makes this spot even more extraordinary. Take some time to sit on the black sand and watch the scene unfold. Birdwatchers especially will love this destination. When I visited in May, puffins were flying back and forth from the cliffs, while guillemots, eider ducks, and black guillemots floated on the sea. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a curious seal popping its head above the waves!
Nearby lies the charming town of Vík, home to the unique Icelandic Lava Show (not sponsored—just highly recommended!). This is the only place in the world where you can witness real molten lava close up. The experience begins with fascinating insights into Iceland’s volcanoes and geology. But the highlight comes when a stream of glowing lava—heated to around 1000°C—flows into the room. The heat, the glow, and the sound make for an unforgettable sensory experience.
To cool off afterward, head to the Dyrhólaey viewpoint, one of South Iceland’s most scenic spots. In summer, this is also an important puffin nesting area, closed during parts of the breeding season for protection. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the dramatic black coastline, with its endless volcanic sands, roaring waves, and sea cliffs. A perfect ending to a remarkable day.
