Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable. One moment you can be walking through dense fog, the next you’re caught in a sudden hailstorm, and minutes later you’re basking in sunshine. That’s why this 20-day Iceland itinerary includes flexible buffer days. If bad weather strikes, these extra days give you the freedom to adjust your schedule without missing out on key sights. But if, like me, you’re lucky enough to experience the Golden Circle in clear weather, I have the perfect recommendation for your buffer day—a true hidden gem not to be missed: Brúarfoss waterfall.
Reaching Brúarfoss requires a short drive along a gravel road before you arrive at the small parking area. From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk until the waterfall comes into view. Go early in the morning, and you might find yourself alone, able to enjoy Iceland’s raw beauty in perfect peace.
Although smaller than some of Iceland’s more famous falls, Brúarfoss is no less captivating. Often called Iceland’s bluest waterfall, it lives up to the name with its stunning turquoise water. The vibrant color comes from the meltwater of the nearby Langjökull glacier. A small wooden bridge crosses just above the falls, providing the perfect vantage point to admire the shimmering cascade from above. Take your time here—sit down, breathe in the crisp air, and soak up the serene atmosphere, because tomorrow your Iceland adventure continues on the road again.
For an extra special experience, set your alarm early if the skies are predicted to be clear. Watching the sunrise paint the horizon is magical. At my accommodation, the sun rose right behind the tip of a mountain, glowing like the eruption of a volcano—an unforgettable way to begin the day.
